User Interface Design

Options are one of the most powerful tools in finance, but in DeFi they’ve been hard to access, hard to understand and inefficient with capital. Jones DAO set out to change that. Jones is a yield, strategy and liquidity protocol for options on Arbitrum, with vaults that give users one-click access to institutional-grade options strategies, while improving capital efficiency and liquidity through yield-bearing, options-backed tokens. Its products are sophisticated. Advanced strategy vaults like jGLP and jUSDC work together: jGLP borrows USDC from the jUSDC vault to gain leverage on its GLP position, delivering amplified yield to depositors, while jUSDC earns a transparent USDC yield. For users, the risk is clear: if they can’t understand what a vault does, they won’t trust it with their money. From 2022 to 2025, I designed the Jones experience, turning complex options and leverage strategies into clear, scannable dashboards and simple deposit flows. Starting with UI benchmarking and heuristic standards for dashboards, I designed a responsive interface where users could compare vaults, understand their yield and risk at a glance, and deposit with confidence, supported by plain-language UX copy throughout. My role UI benchmarking, UX/UI design, UX copywriting, dashboard heuristic standards, responsive web design. Challenge

Jones DAO’s products were built for a demanding audience and a fast-moving market. Its vaults packaged institutional-grade options and leverage strategies into one-click products, but behind that simplicity sat complex mechanics: vaults borrowing from each other, leveraged positions, auto-compounding, receipt tokens and yields paid in different assets. As lead designer, my challenge was to make all of that understandable without hiding the risk, because in DeFi, users who don’t understand a product either won’t use it or will use it in ways they regret. The audience made this harder. Experienced DeFi traders wanted dense data, fast actions and no hand-holding, while newer users needed to understand what a vault did, where the yield came from and what could go wrong before they deposited. Every dashboard, number and label had to work for both, and there were few established patterns to follow for presenting options strategies on-chain. The pace of the work added its own pressure. Over three years, Jones launched and evolved multiple vaults and strategies, often reacting to changes in the wider DeFi market and the protocols it built on. Each new product had to ship quickly while still fitting into a consistent experience, so the design system had to be flexible enough to absorb new products without the interface fragmenting. All of this happened in a fully remote, global team, working across time zones with engineers, strategists and the DAO community. As lead designer, I had to set clear design direction and standards that others could follow without waiting on me, balance the needs of users, builders and the community, and keep quality high through constant change.

Solution

I set up a design process built for speed and consistency. Each week started with a check-in with the Jones team to agree priorities, review feedback and align on what needed to ship. From there, I worked in one-week design sprints, delivering fully polished UX flows and final UI within the week, ready for engineers to build. This rhythm gave a fully remote, global team a predictable cadence, so new vaults and features could move from idea to production without long design bottlenecks. To make that pace sustainable, I built a design system that every product could draw from. Shared components for vault cards, deposit and withdrawal flows, yield and risk indicators, positions and transaction states meant each new strategy could be designed quickly while still feeling part of the same platform. As Jones launched and evolved its vaults over three years, the system grew with it, absorbing new products without the interface fragmenting. The design itself focused on making complex strategies clear. Starting with UI benchmarking and heuristic standards for dashboards, I designed responsive interfaces that showed the most important information first: what a vault does, where its yield comes from, how it’s performing and what the risks are. Experienced traders could scan dense data and act quickly, while newer users were guided by plain-language copy explaining each strategy before they deposited. The result was a reliable design partnership: weekly alignment, fast turnaround and polished, build-ready work, giving Jones the speed it needed to keep up with a fast-moving DeFi market without trading off quality or clarity.

Result

Over three years, Jones grew from a single options protocol into a full suite of yield and strategy products on Arbitrum, and the design grew with it. The weekly check-ins and one-week sprints gave the team a reliable rhythm: polished, build-ready UX flows and UI every week, so new vaults and features could launch quickly without design becoming a bottleneck. The design system meant every new product, from the jGLP and jUSDC leveraged vaults to the Smart LP strategy suite launched in 2024, felt part of the same platform. Complex strategies were presented clearly and consistently, helping experienced traders act quickly and giving newer users the confidence to deposit. The platform handled real scale. During the Arbitrum incentive program, Jones’s Arbitrum vaults peaked at $30.8M in total value locked, up from $16.7M at the start of the program, and the interface supported that growth without needing a redesign. Three years of continuous product design, from 2022 to 2025 Weekly check-ins and one-week design sprints with build-ready UX and UI One design system across every vault and strategy Arbitrum vaults peaked at $30.8M TVL in early 2024

From our Client:

“William brought exceptional creativity and leadership to Jones DAO. He built our design system from the ground up and led product design, UX and UI across our vaults and strategies, turning some of the most complex products in DeFi into experiences our users could understand and trust. Thank you, William, for raising the bar for everything we built.”
